7 Disneyland restaurants and bars set reopening dates including Trader Sams

Posted by Florance Siggers on Friday, June 7, 2024

Disneyland fans craving a Shrunken Zombie Head cocktail and a pupu platter at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar will soon be able to quench their thirst and satisfy their hunger when the popular poolside bar named for a shrunken head dealer on the Jungle Cruise finally returns.

Trader Sam’s and 6 other restaurants and bars at the Disneyland resort are set to reopen for the first time since being shuttered in March 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Disneyland and Disney California Adventure reopened on April 30 after a 412-day coronavirus closure along with just over half the park’s 70+ food and beverage locations.

The biggest news among the reopening restaurants and bars is Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, which returns on July 2 at Disneyland Hotel. Disneyland’s flagship hotel also partially reopens on July 2 with reservations limited to the Fantasy Tower.

Trader Sam’s was named for the shrunken head dealer at the end of the Jungle Cruise attraction at Disneyland.

Walt Disney Imagineering is updating Jungle Cruise scenes at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom to remove “negative depictions of native people” while adding several new scenes. Jungle Cruise reopens at Disneyland on July 16.

The audio-animatronic Trader Sam the headhunter will be removed from the finale scene of the ride. In a new scene, Trader Sam is now an unseen Jungle Navigation Company manager who has converted the river tour company’s thatched-roofed hut for lost and found items into the Trader Sam’s Gift Shop.

There are no plans to make changes at the Jungle Cruise-themed Trader Sam’s bars at the Disneyland and Disney World resorts.

Trader Sam’s will serve a Shrunken Zombie Head cocktail along with Piranha Pool, Mosquito Mojito and Safari Swizzle mixed drinks, according to the lounge menu. Also on the bar menu: cheeseburgers, chicken wings, tempura shrimp, pork gyoza and pu pu platters.

The Tangaroa Terrace Tropical Bar & Grill next door to Trader Sam’s will also reopen on July 2.

Inside Disneyland, the Hungry Bear restaurant will reopen on July 1 for the first time in more than 15 months.

The return of Hungry Bear is notable since the restaurant was the focus of speculation that the eatery could be turned into Tiana’s Palace as part of a “Princess and the Frog” makeover of Splash Mountain.

Actress Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Princess Tiana in the Disney animated movie, told People magazine in 2020 she wants to see Tiana’s Palace from the film realized as a real restaurant at Disneyland and Disney World.

Disneyland has pushed back the opening date for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway to 2023, leaving 2022 open for a potential debut of the reimagined Splash Mountain — although an official date has not yet been announced.

The Harbor Gallery food stand across from Splash Mountain will also return on July 1.
