Why Din Djarin Goes Back To The Mandalorian Sect In Book Of Boba Fett

Spoilers for The Book of Boba Fett episodes 1-5.

The Mandalorian season 2 saw to it that Din Djarin’s personal journey with Grogu had taken him far and beyond the limiting and narrow-minded rules of his Mandalorian sect, the Children of the Watch, so why does he go back to them in The Book of Boba Fett? At first glance, it seems as if Din Djarin’s appearance in The Book of Boba Fett has stripped him from his previous character development. After a closer look, however, it is not only apparent that episode 5 serves Din’s character arc, but serves the plot of The Book of Boba Fett as a whole.

Very quickly, the new episode shows the viewer that Din Djarin isn’t with Bo-Katan & The Nite Owls, and that he has instead sought out the remnants of his own sect of Mandalorians. It is uncertain how much time has passed since the ending of The Mandalorian season 2, and Bo Katan is mentioned sparingly, let alone the nature of Din’s departure from her and her group. Given all that Din has learned over the first two seasons of his show and all of the people he has met, it initially seems odd that he would return to his fanatic sect, however the show also hints as to why he does this.

As Din Djarin spends more time with the Armorer and Paz Viszla, the only two remaining members of their sect, it becomes more apparent as to why Din Djarin is there. Boba Fett isn’t in episode 5, and while that seems odd at first, it’s for the purpose of ensuring that Din Djarin’s ideals are firmly in line with Boba’s before he is in a position to help. Boba’s story thus far has very much been about realizing the strength of family/tribe and seeking to establish his own clan. Comparatively, Din Djarin is in a position where he is separated from Grogu, the only family that he has ever chosen. In response to this, he retreats back to his own sect of fanatic Mandalorians in the search for something to fill the void that Grogu’s departure has left. The show proves that Din Djarin no longer belongs with these Mandalorians, however, not just through the previous removals of his helmet, but showing that he is distracted in his mind when trying to use the Darksaber, and having the Armorer make a gift for Grogu, reaffirming Din’s shift in priorities.

By the time Din leaves his sect and arrives on Tatooine, he is without family, yet equally now understands within himself that he is looking for his family. It took him to return to his old sect to consolidate and solidify who he is now, and what he wants from the galaxy. Din removed his helmet on three separate occasions, two of which ultimately served to protect Grogu, but the final time was a show of love to Grogu. Being forced to admit that in front of his old sect solidifies his rejection of their code and the forging of his own way. While Din is still very much conflicted by this concept, that he no longer belongs to the sect, it allows him to focus entirely on his own clan. Not only does this episode set up The Mandalorian season 3, but sets up the remainder of The Book of Boba Fett.

With Din’s mind entirely focused on crafting a future for his family, his own story beats perfectly match Boba’s. Both are on a path to carve their own corner of the galaxy, for their own clans. This proves to the viewers that not only are the two characters friends, but also allied in their ideals. With only two episodes left to go, it is still up in the air exactly how The Book of Boba Fett will end. With the events of episode 5, however, it is sure to show the growth of a lucrative and co-beneficial relationship between Boba and Din. With many unanswered questions after Boba Fett’s episode 5, The Book of Boba Fett has at least explained the narrative importance behind Din Djarin returning to his Mandalorian sect.
